Whether you spell it Sophia or Sofia, the sultry, sexy, sensual, Latin-Mediterranean style of actresses Sophia Loren and Sofia Vergara, is not for shrinking violets. It is, however, a style that is eminently womanly, envied, and much like 2012’s summer fashion vibe, easy to pull off by yourself.

Loren, the object of affection around the globe rose to fame in the late ‘50s and ‘60s as a thinking man’s sex symbol. Smart and savvy, she was the first actress to launch her own fragrance and eyewear collection. Voluptuous and lush like a fresh peach, the iconic actress was an Academy Award Best Actress winner for her role in Two Women, a gritty film set in post war Italy. “La Loren”, as the adoring press called her, was the antithesis of Hollywood’s cool blondes, like Grace Kelly and on the opposite end of the spectrum of gamine actresses Audrey Hepburn or other European stars like Brigitte Bardot.

Vergara, who hails from Columbia, South American, a rising star on the television screen, who came to prominence in ABC’s smart comedic hit, Modern Family, got the role after she dyed her hair brown, inhabiting the role of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, one which has been able to let her stretch her comedic talents. The brainy beauty, who studied dentistry, is a red carpet fixture, and Golden Globes nominee, who favors strapless styles and bold jewels.

It is this southern Italian/Latino ‘50s style that combines seduction, charm and a bit of fun  that inspired designers like Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the duo behind Dolce & Gabbana and Blumarine designer, Anna Molinari, as if they channeled both Sophia and Sofia in their spring/summer collections.
