Givenchy SS16

Easy, modern elegance took center stage at New York Fashion Week, calling to mind all things contemplative, from the air and sky to the earth. Designers took inspiration from all things mystical from quiet musings to meditation, a modern nod to the mysticism of the ‘70s.

The counterbalance of masculine and feminine started in the Fall 2015 collections, was reflected in elegant lingerie looks straight from the boudoir, noteworthy at Riccardo Tisci’s transformative Givenchy show, held at sunset at the site of 911  – silk satin smoking jackets and tuxedo style pajamas and guipure lace slip tunics and dresses – and at Thakoon, where the innerwear as outerwear trend continued in his piped cotton bathrobe over shirttail tunic and elegant white robe with black narrow pant and at Altuzarra, where his off the shoulder crinkle linen wrapped shirts and dresses and jackets forecast the neck and shoulder as a new focal point.

Black and white, worn solo or in tandem continued as a major color statement with celestial blues of every sort

from sky to midnight as well as earthen cream, goldenrod, umber, orange and beet red adding to the earthen imagery.  Soft midcalf dresses and skirts and fluid trousers in chiffon or crinkle cotton were balanced by small off the shoulder and one shoulder tops and tunics and shapely, softly structured suit jackets.

Graceful long drop earrings, in precious gold or set with polished cabochon jasper, coral or ivory at Altuzarra and wood bead and gold necklaces set with carved flowers at Givenchy played up the graceful neck and shoulder focus.

A moving and thoughtful starting point for the Spring/Summer 2016 collections.
