A New Way with a Dress and Pant
There’s a new look afoot for spring/summer. We first saw it on the fashion runways in Europe. It’s a new way of styling combining a pant and a dress, wearing them together, one over the other. It’s an update on the legging and dress concept, but we think with much more style and élan.

Wearing a dress and pants harkens back to the ‘40s and ‘50s when patio and at home entertaining dictated a more glamorous style of dress. Think of the heroine, “Mame Dennis”, portrayed by Rosalind Russell, in the movie Auntie Mame, she of the outsized personality and cigarette holder to go with it or the actress Loretta Young, host of her own program, The Loretta Young Show, who made a grand entrance at the opening of each show.

The dress and pant combo look works best with a short or long shirtwaist dress and was shown both over pants and shorts. You can also create the look with a shirt and button front skirt over a short or pant as Daks did. Drop earrings, a fluid necklace, bracelet and espadrilles balance the look. Or you can style it the manner of Grace Kelly, in the Hitchcock film, to Catch a Thief, French Riviera style, as Temperly London, did with a turban wrapped head and oversized sunglasses. Add pretty earrings and a bracelet, a pendant necklace, sandals to the dress-over-pant and you’re ready for summer evenings, American in Paris style.
