A Look at the Award Winning Looks on the 2012 Red Carpet

The first of the award season’s big events, the 69th Golden Globes, went off without a hitch despite the threat of inclement weather. The awards were split among movie favorites The Iron Lady, The Artist, The Descendants and My Week with Marilyn, but the best dressed looks of both the nominees and the winners garnered the lion’s share of attention on the red carpet.

The looks were all there: old Hollywood glamour, sexy strapless styles, directional covered up looks and edgier styles that pushed the fashion envelope. Some of the standouts: Charlize Theron, classic perfection in pink Dior Haute Couture, hitting all the fashion bases – pink, bows, plunging neckline ‘20s style hair, vintage Cartier headband, and diamond studs.

Shoulder dusting style earrings stole some of thunder at the show: Sofia Vergara’s romantic Harry Winston diamond drops topping Vera Wang mermaid gown, presenter Julianne Moore’s Fred Leighton dazzling emerald tassel drops accentuating a black strapless Chanel style and Kate Winslet’s shapely gold drops worn with black and white satin.

Young stars pushed the fashion envelope with color and style: Evan Rachel Wood in a green and black sequin gown with feathered hem by Gucci Premier, Emma Stone in Lanvin’s exquisite tonal plum chiffon and sequin belted gown and award winner Claire Dane’s structured and bejeweled J. Mendel black and white gown worn with sleek hair and Bulgari earrings and bracelet.

Color reigned, with purple – from mauve to lilac to purple to burgundy and green – from hunter to emerald to blue-green – stealing the show, while nude toned looks worn by Julie Bowen and Kate Beckinsale, among others, garnered attention and allure. Plunging necklines and backs, mermaid and fishtail styles (frequently bordered with feathers) and daring, yet discreet styles enticed with long sleeves paired with deep v neck or plunging backs – case in point Jason Wu’s flocked navy gown on award winner Michelle Williams.
This year’s Golden Globes offered an enticing entry into the awards season’s red carpet style.
