TIMBUKTU : The beauty of this ring lies not only in its design and carefully hand-made construction, but the way the colors interact. Designer Linda Hagobian starts with ebony wood from the forests of Africa that has been smoothed into a satiny finish. Incredibly lightweight, the dark color sets the perfect backdrop for the amazingly colored turquoise, which is free of the dark matrix of lines often seen in other stones.
Linda uses turquoise, ebony, diamonds, Italian-crafted 18-karat gold, and sterling silver findings in all of her pieces. While she crafts the designs, it takes a global village to assemble Hagobian's pieces, from the artisans in Italy who painstakingly make sure each graduated piece of turquoise is of the right size and color and perfectly strung, to the 42 African men and women who carve the ebony into precise shapes. As a sign of gratitude, the company donates part of the proceeds of the collection to Dogon Schulen, which builds schools in Mali, West Africa.
