Deep purple amethyst, sea-like aquamarine, pink morganite, sunny citrine and smoky quartz. Laying claim to any one of those gemstones would be nice, but Brazil just happens to be home to all of those sizzling hot gemstones and more.
That is why ever since the 18th century, colored gemstone dealers all over the world over visit Brazil, where these exotic colored gemstones were first discovered. The first to catch onto the gem bounty were the royals, who of course, snagged large gems for the crown jewels, with Russia's czarinas favoring Brazil's imperial topaz.
These days, gemstone dealers in the know head directly to Minas Gerais (which means "General Mines" in Portugese, the native tongue of Brazil). It is home to some of Brazil's most exquisite gemstone and gold mines, and Minas Gerais is also where you'll find the headquarters of Vianna, a Brazilian jewelry design company that doesn't mind letting its fans known that some of the most exquisite gemstones in the world are right outside its doors.
The Vianna family founded the company four generations ago, and through the years, it has stayed close to the source of its natural beauty, making gemstones the focal points of every piece the brand creates.
"We are based where most of the gemstones are found," says Ricardo Vianna, president and CEO of Vianna. "We keep our roots as being the most specialized brand in Brazil offering fine gold jewelry with colored gemstones."
Although its history as a gemstone center imbues the company with a sense of tradition, Vianna is very much about crafting modern designs that are perfectly in sync with the take charge sensibilities of the women who wear the brand's bold, colorful designs.
"Vianna Jóias has been growing and evolving along with the Brazilian jewelry industry, marking its presence in the market, and strengthening its brand worldwide," says Vianna.
Whether you're talking about supermodels like Gisele Bünchen, Adriana Lima, or the "tall, tan and lovely" girl from Ipanema, there's no doubt that Brazilian women are something special. Vianna sees Brazilian women's special style as a big inspiration behind the designs. These women are stylish and trendy, but grounded enough in knowing who they are that they don't fall for every fad. Whether in blue jeans and a T-shirt or a cocktail dress, they aren't shy about expressing their individual style.
"Our jewelry is created for the modern, seductive and sophisticated woman and is suitable for grand affairs as well as everyday events. These women are connected with the latest trends but never lose their essence," Vianna says.
What's more, each design carries what the brand considers to be its identity or DNA, a combination of indigenous colors and culture. Proud of Brazil's history and traditions, as well as its modern culture, Vianna hopes to share that look through its jewelry. "We are inspired by the colors, shapes and art of our country, our icons, our music, our rich culture," Vianna says. "Our passion is translated in the jewelry."
As a designer, Vianna very much lets the gemstones themselves do the talking, allowing the colors and shapes to help speak to and inspire the design. "How do we define our design? Vianna Jóias is sophisticated, contemporary, shiny and colorful," says Vianna. The company's philosophy is to have a variety of gemstones be the centerpiece of designs that are set in rich, 18-karat gold. So enamored of the gemstones it uses in its creations, Vianna actually came up with its own names for some of them, such as "green gold quartz," "olive quartz" or "whiskey citrine." Other favorites include prasiolite, which is green quartz, and rhodolite.
"We always combine our exclusively designed fancy cuts with traditional ones to create our jewelry," says Vianna. "In vibrant or pastel tones, in faceted or cabochon cuts, in classic or fancy shapes, they are the beginning of our designs." Vianna sees their designs as a way to bring the exuberant style and sophistication of Brazilian women and culture to other women around the world. After all, Brazil is a beautiful place, known for its exquisite beaches, picturesque mountains, lush rainforests and charming towns, but it is also renowned for its contemporary approach to design: clean lines, bold geometric shapes, and organic-inspired pieces that pay homage to the native flora, for example.
"We see our jewelry as pieces of art; and art is about beauty," says Vianna. "We are proud of taking the Brazilian lifestyle to women all around the world, proud of being capable of telling our history, proud of making women connected to the Brazilian culture through our designs."
Who needs a cookie-cutter look of gemstones that are all the same size and shape? Vianna's Assymetrico collection features exquisitely shaped and cut gemstones in earthy and exhilarating hues that the Brazilian gemstone mines turn up again and again, such as champagne citrine, green-gold quartz, light yellow citrine, prasiolite (green quartz) and olive quartz, all set in 18K gold. Some pieces feature a sprinkling of diamonds too. Wear these pieces with simple silhouettes, such as a sheath dress, or even a basic t-shirt and let these gemstones in various shapes, sizes and settings make an unforgettable style statement for you.

The unabashedly feminine designs in Vianna's Madame collection quietly and confidently bespeak luxury while also playing up the country's native gemstones through the use of large, beautifully cut and vibrantly hued stones set in 18tK rose and yellow gold. Within this collection, you'll find that the design house has come up with some gemstone names based upon hue such as "lilac amethyst" and "green gold quartz". You'll also find darker purple amethyst, and prasiolite, which is green quartz.
With its curvy designs and the bright colors of its gemstones, Vianna's Gumdrop collection is sweet, as the name suggests, but not for wallflowers. The gemstones within the collection range from more neutral stones such as smoky quartz and citrine to bolder gems, such as rose quartz and amethyst, all set in 18K rose or yellow gold, in organic-inspired motifs. Diamonds add extra glam, but they don't take anything away from the colored gemstones that are the star attraction.
Big, bold and colorful, this is perhaps the most Brazil-centric collection by Vianna, and its name, the Splash collection, says it all. The gemstones in the collection take the stage and include a range of colors, similar to what you might find in a makeup palette. There's pink and purple amethyst, sultry smoky quartz, London blue topaz, prasiolite (green quartz) and yellow citrine, to name a few. The gemstones are combined in colorful mixes, and some form paisley-like patterns, with many of the designs sprinkled with diamonds.
