In the two years leading up to the launch of Jewelista.com, our team of merchants literally criss-crossed the globe, racking up some 100,000 air miles, wearing out several pieces of luggage and a few soles.
But our team says it was worth it. Along the way, their travels took them to major trade shows in Las Vegas, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Hong Kong and Brazil among others, and some locations that were off the beaten path.
Their goal: to find jewelry talents who are rarely-if ever-found in the U.S. market.
As you click through the pages of Jewelista's Designer's Studio, you'll discover the treasure trove of talent they found.
While on their hunt for the latest and most innovative designers, our merchants came across some undiscovered, emerging design talent that they just couldn't pass up. Some had just begun their businesses; others were flourishing in a distant land yet were still too small to expand internationally.
So our merchants decided to bring in these limited, special collections from these designers as part of our From Our Travels section.
Of course, traipsing around the world looking for amazing jewelry may sound to many like a dream job come true, but it still involves a lot of hard work, long hours, and jet lag that seems to linger for weeks.
But Jewelista's intrepid merchants march on: they're already working on their next stops around the globe where they have heard tales about budding, yet undiscovered talent.
It's that quest of discovery that keeps them invigorated. "Sure, the traveling is tough sometimes, but when we happen upon something original or extraordinary, those discoveries make it all worthwhile," one of our buyers says.
For our From Our Travels collection, our merchants had a little more leeway in what they could include.
"We seek designers with strong personal concepts expressed in distinctive, easily wearable, and affordable jewelry," our buyer says. "We're on the lookout for ideas that stand out as new directions for jewelry or for designers freely using materials in unexpected ways."
Their often incredible finds can be found here at Jewelista. Whether it's an intricately carved piece of fossilized wood -- a material highly prized since Roman times -- to sleek, futuristic designs created in contemporary metals such as stainless steel or aluminum, there's something among the From our Travels discoveries that can appeal to anyone on any budget.
In the U.K., women are over the moon about London-based jewelry design company The Branch, founded by Wendy Pickard. The brand offers jewelry crafted from rosewood that is brought into the luxe realm with the addition of precious metal accents and gemstones. Hand-made in Indonesia by local craftsmen who are adept at playing up the natural wood grain to great effect, nothing is added to this wood jewelry except beeswax for conditioning. Steel is synonymous with skyscrapers, not jewelry, but Swiss jewelry design company Veto challenges that premise with its sleek yet feminine designs that transform stainless steel into fine art, ranging from an intricately woven chain necklace to a pair of pearl drop earrings reminiscent of a sculpture. Many of the pieces are interchangeable, meaning that with a little imagination, the wearer can make pieces that they can uniquely call their own. Shop This Collection
You can tell from the sleek and simple geometric shapes of his jewelry that architecture has something to do with Filip Vanas' background. Indeed the minimalist designer, who is from the Czech Republic, but now lives in Ireland, originally studied architecture before making his transition into jewelry. This influence has lead him to incorporate industrial materials into his designs which include anodized aluminum, wire and resin, while also using precious metals, such as silver. Practically halfway across the world when Art Deco began, Yuwa wasn't even conceived. Yet the Chinese supplier of semi-precious stones has mastered the art movement's aesthetic full well in their contemporary collection of bangles. You can see Yuwa's passion for creativity and refinement embedded within each jewelry piece as every stone is intricately placed next to the other. And the stones themselves are superb; ranging from traditional Chinese tiger eye to brilliant pearl derived from black lip oysters. The bold bangles feel sleek to the touch and add the right amount of drama to any outfit.
