Brother and sister duo Jordi and Maite were nurtured by the Catalonian culture - one that marches to the beat of its own drum, separate from the other provinces of Spain. So when it came time to continue working in their family's shop selling traditional jewelry, it was no surprise that their dissenting nature would inspire them to create a path that would be all their own.
"Everything starts like a dream inside of me. Something that is difficult for me to describe with words. Colors, innovative textures, and unexpected shapes come alive in every piece of jewelry we create," says Maite. Another industry that often bridges the gap between dream and reality is fashion, and it's one which they love. Inspired by the fast pace and evolution of trends, they seek the same constant change in their designs. But despite the ongoing transition between seasons, the same rebellious spirit that started AS&AS stays with them.
It's one thing to render a piece of abstract jewelry using a paper and pencil, but actually creating something tangible requires a whole new arsenal of tools. Thanks to Jordi's technical fascination and constant desire to find innovative techniques, the team takes design to new heights.
For example, to create the psychedelic pieces that appear in the Sunspot and Majorica Magic collections, a pattern is printed on silver and fused onto the pieces with extremely high temperatures. This creates a modern kind of enamel that is fade-resistant and stays vibrantly colored. And in the Duette collection, the AS&AS team infuses pure white quartz with a rich dye that creates a flawlessly colored stone.
Silver is the spice of the company's life, and its used in nearly every piece of jewelry created. But because of AS&AS' knack for reinvention, it never becomes repetitive. The designers keep the material fresh by using a combination of urban lifestyle, nature, and surrealist art as blueprints. The pieces are then carved, polished and created in a range of different materials, making each piece a work of art.
